"Chazaq"
Then David and the people who were with him lifted their voices and wept until there was no strength in them to weep. Now David's two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. Moreover David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God. (I Samuel 30:4-6)
How did David strengthen himself. Well, the word strengthen is the Hebrew word “Chazaq” which means “to fasten.” This is a word picture for those who are going through trials like David was.
Samuel had already anointed David with oil, declaring him to be king over Israel but the current king, Saul, was bound and determined to kill him. David was in the desert being chased by people who wanted him dead. His wives had been kidnapped, and now, even those who were with him wanted him dead. How was David going to strengthen himself? How can one strengthen himself?
As I mentioned, the Hebrew word Chazaq means to strengthen or fasten. To strengthen himself, David fastened himself to his God who had given him a word through the prophet Samuel. In a way, David was fastening himself to the prophetic word that he had been given. I want to encourage each one of my readers to fasten themselves to God and to His promises. Find a place of quiet every day and cry out to God like David did. Fasten yourself to God’s promises and He will deliver you!
